Can I keep my domain when moving to WordPress?

Keep your domain when moving to WordPress. Plan DNS, email records, HTTPS and old page URLs before switching your website.

By AnythingTo · Updated

Yes. You can usually keep the same domain when moving from Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, Framer or another website builder to WordPress, provided you control its DNS settings. AnythingTo can help convert the website; pointing the domain to the new host is a separate launch step. Keep the original site available until you have checked the replacement.

Do I need to transfer my domain registration?

Usually, no. Your domain registration, DNS settings and website hosting are separate services, even when one company bills for all three. You can often leave the domain registered where it is and change the records that point visitors to the website.

Before cancelling a builder subscription, check whether it also pays for the domain, email or another service you still need. Make sure you can sign in to the domain account and renew the registration independently.

What should I prepare before changing DNS?

  • Keep a copy of the current DNS records and identify who controls them.
  • Review the replacement WordPress site on its temporary address.
  • Check important pages, mobile layouts, navigation and contact forms.
  • List your current page URLs and their corresponding WordPress URLs.
  • Confirm the new host’s exact DNS instructions and HTTPS setup.
  • Keep access to the original host so you can investigate problems during the switch.

Will changing my website affect my email?

A website move does not require moving your email service. Preserve the records used by that service, including MX records and any provider-required TXT or CNAME records. Replacing the entire DNS zone without copying those records can interrupt email.

If you change nameservers, prepare all necessary records at the new DNS provider first. Ask your email provider which records it requires. After the website switch, test both sending and receiving email; a working website does not prove email is unaffected.

Can I keep my page URLs and search traffic?

Keeping the same domain does not automatically preserve every page address. Compare the full paths, including blog or collection prefixes, trailing slashes and product URLs. Where possible, keep useful existing URLs and update internal links to the final addresses.

If a page address changes, plan a permanent redirect to its closest replacement. Avoid sending every old page to the homepage. Review canonicals, the sitemap and indexing settings after launch. Rankings can fluctuate during a migration; neither conversion nor redirects guarantee unchanged traffic.

How do I move my website with AnythingTo?

Start with a public site link or a permitted HTML export in AnythingTo. Review which pages were read, inspect the converted design and check what your team can edit. Forms, payments and private content need their own review.

When launching on AnythingTo hosting, add your domain and follow the DNS records shown in the dashboard. Domain registration and email remain separate responsibilities. If you use another WordPress host, follow that host’s domain and deployment instructions.

Common questions

Can AnythingTo convert my site while I keep my existing domain?

Yes. AnythingTo can convert an accessible website into WordPress while you keep your domain. Review the conversion first, then connect the domain to your chosen host. You need control of the domain’s DNS settings.

Do I have to buy a new domain for WordPress?

No. If you already own a domain, you can usually use it for your WordPress site. Keep the registration active and follow your host’s instructions to connect it.

Should I cancel my old website before moving?

Keep the original site and required services available while you check the replacement. Confirm the new website, HTTPS, forms, redirects and email work before cancelling services you no longer need.

Will keeping the same domain guarantee my Google rankings stay the same?

No. Content, URLs, redirects, internal links, performance and indexing settings can change during a move. Keeping the domain helps maintain a familiar address, but it does not guarantee unchanged rankings.
