How to move Squarespace to WordPress

Compare Squarespace export and website conversion, keep your images and design, plan commerce or bookings, and check your WordPress site before launch.

Squarespace offers a content export, but it does not carry your complete website design into WordPress. Choose whether you need selected content or the look of the published site too, then plan images, services and launch checks around that choice.

Choose between a content export and a site conversion

Squarespace can export selected content as a WordPress-compatible XML file. Its documentation says the export includes one blog but excludes style settings, custom CSS and several page or block types. It is useful for moving supported content; it is not a copy of the entire website.

If keeping the design matters, review a website conversion as a separate option. AnythingTo starts from the published pages to bring the visible design and content into WordPress. You still need to compare the result with the pages and services your site relies on.

List everything you want to keep

Record ordinary pages, blog posts, galleries, events, products and any hidden campaign pages you still use. Save a few desktop and mobile views of your most important pages. Check more than the homepage: a gallery, an article and an event page may each need a different review.

If you have several blogs, keep a separate list of each one. Note content that is not publicly visible and plan how to bring it across separately. A conversion can only work with the pages and files it can access.

Make sure your images move with the site

Check that images are available in the WordPress media library and still display on the live pages. Squarespace warns that some WordPress imports can leave images linked to Squarespace rather than copied to the new site. Those links can stop working after cancellation.

For each important page, open the main photo, check smaller gallery images and review the crop on a phone. Keep the original files where possible. If an image is missing, bring it across before ending the old subscription.

Try the edits your team will make

Ask the people who maintain the site to update a heading, replace an image and add a new article. Check that the new article appears in the right list, and that shared contact details and navigation are easy to find.

The WordPress editor will differ from Squarespace. Decide which tasks should be simple content updates and which are larger design changes. A longer headline or a portrait photo is a useful test of how the layout handles future content.

Plan commerce, memberships and scheduling separately

Squarespace Commerce checkout, Member Areas and Scheduling are separate from the visible page design. A converted product page or booking button does not mean purchases, member accounts or appointments have moved.

Choose the services you will use on the new site and test them from beginning to end. Include payment confirmation, booking emails and account access where relevant. Check any related subscriptions before cancelling the old website; the website, domain and email may be managed separately.

Review links and launch with a way back

Match old page addresses to the new ones. Keep existing addresses where possible and redirect moved pages to their closest replacement. Check page titles, search descriptions and important images, then follow a few old links as a visitor would.

Once the domain is connected, test the live site while signed out. Check mobile navigation, forms, galleries and any essential purchase or booking flow. Keep the original site available until you have confirmed the move works, and monitor search traffic after launch.

Share your Squarespace website

Send your published site address, a rough page count and the features you need to keep. Mention multiple blogs, a shop, appointments or member-only content early so the move can be planned around them.
