What happens to contact forms when moving to WordPress?

Move contact forms to WordPress without losing enquiries. Plan fields, recipients, email delivery, spam protection and tests.

By AnythingTo · Updated

A converted form can look right without sending an enquiry anywhere. When moving a website to WordPress, treat its fields, submission handling, saved entries and email notifications as separate things to configure and test. AnythingTo converts the visible website; the original builder’s form service does not automatically become a WordPress service.

Does converting the page also move the form service?

The visible page contains labels, inputs and buttons. Submission handling may belong to Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, a separate form provider or a custom server. Copying the page’s appearance does not transfer that account, server or its stored submissions.

Inventory each form before converting: contact, newsletter, quote request, job application and booking forms can have different requirements. Export historical entries separately when the original service permits it. Keep personal information out of design files or screenshots used for conversion.

Should I use a WordPress form or keep an external provider?

Use a WordPress form when you want the site to handle submissions and store enquiries locally. Choose a form solution that supports the actual fields, spam controls and integrations you require. A basic contact form is not a replacement for a payment, medical intake or complex booking workflow.

Keeping an existing external provider can be useful when it already handles your newsletter, CRM or booking process. Reconnect its supported embed or integration, review any account or consent requirements, and test it on the new domain. Avoid adding two submission handlers to the same form.

Why can a WordPress form say sent when no email arrives?

The application may have handed a message to its mailer without confirming delivery to the recipient’s inbox. WordPress explicitly distinguishes a successful mail call from successful receipt. Email can still be rejected, delayed or filtered after that handoff.

Configure an email provider and an authorised sender for your domain. Follow that provider’s authentication instructions, then test a real submission. Check the saved entry, the recipient inbox, spam folder and reply address. Keep a way to recover enquiries if a notification fails.

How do I test forms before launching the converted site?

  • Submit while signed out, using the same form visitors will see.
  • Try a phone as well as a desktop, and test keyboard navigation.
  • Check required fields, invalid email addresses and empty submissions.
  • Confirm the enquiry is saved in the intended system.
  • Confirm the notification arrives and replying reaches the test sender.
  • Check the thank-you message, redirects and any connected automation.
  • Repeat a submission after connecting the final domain.
  • Document who will monitor enquiries and resolve delivery problems.

What should I check in an AnythingTo conversion?

Use AnythingTo to review the converted pages and their visual comparison, then inspect every form’s behaviour separately. The conversion checklist keeps visitor journeys marked for your review because a matching screenshot cannot prove that an enquiry reaches your team.

Explain your form requirements in the conversion request: field list, recipients, current provider and any connected services. Never paste SMTP passwords or customer enquiry exports into a public design. Keep provider credentials in the appropriate private settings, and confirm the result with a real test submission.

Common questions

Can I convert a website to WordPress with its contact form?

AnythingTo can convert the visible website, including the form’s appearance. You still need to connect a WordPress submission handler or your existing form provider, configure recipients and test that enquiries are saved and delivered.

Will my old form submissions automatically move to WordPress?

No. Historical entries belong to the original form service or database. Export them separately where supported, review permission and privacy requirements, and plan any import independently of the page conversion.

Is installing a form plugin enough to make my imported form work?

No. Installation, configuration and testing are separate steps. Connect the actual form on the page, set its fields and recipient, configure email delivery and submit a test enquiry.

Does a successful email test prove the contact form works?

No. It checks only part of the delivery path. Submit the real contact form too, confirm any saved entry, check the recipient inbox and verify the reply address and connected services.
